Meranews Network, Ahmedabad: After the 48-hour high voltage political drama in the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), Nitin Patel took official charge as Deputy Chief Minister (DyCM) of Gujarat at his office in Swarnimsankool-1 building in Gandhiangar at 11.39 am on Sunday.

Nitin Patel who has been elected as the second time DyCM in the leadership of Vijay Rupani, was sulking after the BJP high command kept him away from key portfolios like finance and urban development in the newly formed BJP government.

The situation created crises situation for the saffron party triggered after Nitin Patel raised issue of not taking the charge unless his respect is restored.

While addressing a press conference on Sunday morning, Patel informed the media of taking charge of DyCM as BJP president Amit Shah has assured him of the key portfolio to be given to him with honour.

“I had shared my concerns with the high command and other senior members ‘Either give me the portfolios that I deserve or keep me away from other portfolios too.’ Following the request, I got a call from our party president Amit Shah today morning at 7.30, assuring me of being given the deserving portfolios that suits to a DyCM position.

Patel further added “As per the instructions given by the high command, chief minister Vijay Rupani will be handing over the papers to the Governor (OP Kohli) today (Sunday) afternoon with the suggested new portfolios.”

It is said that Nitin Patel shall be given either Finance or Urban development department, as per the high command’s decision.

Senior BJP ministers and party members Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, Kaushik Patel and Pradipsinh Jadeja met Nitin Patel at BJP leader Babu Jamnadas Patel's house on Saturday. However, according to sources, the meeting didn’t go well and Nitin Patel had left.

Many senior leaders and party members like Surendra Patel (kaka), Narottam Patel met Patel at his residence and supported him. Patel had told in the media earlier that his fight is for prestige and not post. Also his respect should be restored in the party.

Many Patidar leaders and association came in the support of Nitin Patel as they felt his disrespect is their community’s contempt.

Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leader Hardik Patel, who has been opposing Nitin Patel for the past two years, came in DyCM’s support. He had also offered Patel to join Congress along with his MLAs who are with him; he can be given a higher position (maybe Gujarat CM).

Even Sardar Patel Group (SPG) leader, Lalji Patel expressed discontent against the BJP government and stood by DyCM who hails from Mehsana. Patel won the Mehsana seat with more than 7,000 votes which is highly dominated by Patel community.

Nitin Patel is said to be from Anandiben Patel’s lobby. Being a well-wisher of his, Anandiben had suggested Nitin Patel to put his concerns to PM Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah. Interestingly, Anandiben was also side lined by the high command and, as per sources, was pressured to resign as the Gujarat CM following the Patidar agitation.
