MeraNews Network, Ahmedabad: Book lovers who have been thronging the GMDC ground in the city for the seventh edition of the Amdavad National Bookfair were in for a shock when they spotted a large stall selling books and other literature on self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, who has been convicted of rape charges by the Rajasthan High Court. The bookfair, organized by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, was inaugurated by chief minister Vijay Rupani on November 24.

Asaram is currently serving a life sentence in Jodhpur central jail. He is accused of encroachment of land, practicing black magic and sexual assault and rape. His son Narayan Sai is also jailed is currently being kept at Lajpor Jail in Surat on charges of rape. The national level book fair in the city which attracts literature and book lovers from across the state and country has been left red-faced since the AMC let Asaram’s Ashram book two stalls at the exhibition hall to sell their books and other literature. The organizers have also allowed life-size posters of Asaram to be put on display right next to the stalls. The book fair sees participation from several prominent national and local publishers.

People passing by stall numbers 137 and 138 curiously stop by upon reading the banner that says Sant Shri Asaramji Satsahitya Mandir. The event has many famous writers and their readers attending functions where they meet and greet. And this Asaram Bapu stall has got them talking, mostly in disgust. Even Municipal Commissioner Vijay Nehra had paid visits to almost all the stalls inside the exhibition hall and seems like neither he nor the officials at AMC were bothered by the stall, or maybe they simply chose to ignore its presence.
