Hitesh Chavda, Gandhinagar: The Ahmedabad division of Western Railways has in the last five years caught at least 11 lakh people travelling in trains without ticket and has collected about Rs 51 crores in fines. This information was revealed in an RTI response to a query by this correspondent.
The RTI application had asked for three sets of information;
1) Total fines collected from passengers found travelling without a valid ticket or pass from March 2013 to March 2018.
2) Number of passengers caught travelling without a valid ticket or pass from March 2013 to March 2018.
3) Information about people who were imprisoned for failing to pay the fine for failing to produce a valid ticket or pass for travelling in a train during March 2013 to March 2018.
The Assistant Public Information Officer for the Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway in its response to the RTI query on October 10, 2018 informed that during the five year period from 2013-14 to 2017-18, 11,01,848 people were caught travelling without a valid ticket or pass in trains and a total Rs 51,66612 were collected in fines from them. None of them were arrested and sent to jail for the offense.
