Prashant Dayal, Ahmedabad: Vasant Solanki, a former inspector with the Gujarat CID Crime and a part of the investigation team that investigated the infamous fake encounter of Rajasthan-based gangster Sohrabuddin Shaikh, has claimed that he fears for his life and that certain people in power don’t want him to appear before the court for the hearings of the case. Solanki, who was investigating the fake encounter of Sohrabuddin by Gujarat and Rajasthan police officials until the case was handed over to CBI, has been a witness in the case which is being heard in a special court in Mumbai.

It was on the basis of the proof and witness accounts collected by Solanki, the then DIG Rajnish Rai had arrested IPS officers DG Vanzara, Rajkumar Pandian and Dinesh MN. When IPS Geeta Johri was made a part of the investigating team, Solanki was witness to Amit Shah saying that the case papers must be destroyed. The Mumbai court which has finished verifying the witness accounts is now cross verifying the statements of forensic and investigating officials. Solanki, who was supposed to remain present for the hearing in the Mumbai court, was absent. He had asked for security claiming a threat to his life, and the Supreme Court had granted him protection and jawans from the Ahmedabad police used to guard him ever since.

But since July 18, 2018, the guards didn’t show up on their duty and the Ahmedabad Gujarat Police didn’t provide him with any satisfactory answers on why his security was withdrawn. He wrote to the Gujarat DGP, Ahmedabad Police Commissioner and CBI Director seeking answers on why his security cover has been removed.

He refused to travel to Mumbai for his scheduled appearance in the court saying that he fears for his and his family’s life and would not travel without a security cover. He said that he could meet the fate of judge Loya or his family could be attacked upon his absence.
