MeraNews Network, Rajkot: The Indian cricket team defeated an inexperienced West Indies in the first test match of the two test series in Rajkot on Saturday. India won by an innings and 272 runs. The West Indies were all out for 196 in their second innings.

Spinners dominated the West Indies batsmen as Kuldeep Yadav's maiden 5-wicket haul tumbled the visitors. Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets and Ravichandran Ashwin two in the second innings.

Earlier in the day, Ashwin produced a brilliant spell as India enforced a follow-on against the West Indies after bowling out the visitors for 181 in their first innings. The final scores: India - 649/9 declared. West Indies 181 and 196. Debutante Prithvi Shaw was the player of the match as he slammed a magnificent century in the first innings. Many compared the 18-year-old former India U-19 skipper as the next Sachin Tendulkar.

The second and final test will be played from the 12th of this month at Hyderabad. Thereafter, India and West Indies will play five one day internationals and three Twenty 20s.
