Ahmedabad: Rahul Gandhi was declared the new president of the Congress party on Monday, taking the reins from his mother Sonia Gandhi.

All 89 nomination papers proposing the name of Rahul Gandhi for president were found valid, Mullappally Ramachandra, the returning officer for the party’s election for the post, wrote. “Since the withdrawal date/time is over and as there is only one candidate, as per Article XVIII (d) of the Constitution of Indian National Congress, I hereby declare Shri Rahul Gandhi elected as president of the Indian National Congress,” he wrote.

Soon after he submitted his nomination papers for his expected elevation last week, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had attacked the Congress and the Gandhi scion for its “dynastic politics.”
