Ahmedabad: Congress national president Rahul Gandhi received a “euphoric reception” in Bahrain’s capital Manama on Monday, while on his first foreign visit since taking over the reins of the party in December.

Gandhi is in the West Asian country address a conclave of non-resident Indians (NRIs) under the aegis of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO).

The Congress president met Prince Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa at the Al Wadi Palace and the two spoke about plans to develop sports and cricket together. Gandhi also met Prince Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Bahrain’s crown prince, and Bahrain foreign minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa.

Gandhi will address the GOPIO conference later in the day.
