MeraNews Network, Ahmedabad: Saina Nehwal defeated P.V. Sindhu in the final of the 82nd Senior National Badminton Championships on Wednesday. It was the third national title in women’s singles for the former World No.1, who previously won in 2006 and 2007.

Nehwal beat the 2016 Rio Olympics silver medallist 21-17, 27-25 and now leads their head-to-head record 2-1.

In the semifinals on Tuesday, Nehwal, currently ranked World No.11, easily overcame Anura Prabhudesai 21-11, 21-10. World No.2 Sindhu, meanwhile, had to come back from a game down to record a 17-21, 21-15, 21-11 victory over Ruthvika Shivani.

The men’s singles final also saw an upset as World No.11 H.S. Prannoy defeated World No.2 Kidambi Srikanth 21-15, 16-21, 21-7.

Srikanth had beaten Prannoy at the French Open Super Series in October, becoming the first Indian and fourth man in history to lift four Super Series titles in a year. His other victories in 2017 were in Denmark, Indonesia and Australia. (With inputs from ANI)
