Ahmedabad: Surat's Manav Thakkar ensured a medal for players from Gujarat at the ongoing 79th Senior Inter-State and National Table Tennis Championships at Ranchi, but went down to A. Amalraj in a closely fought semifinal 11-6, 20-18, 9-11, 11-13, 7-11, 10-12 on Tuesday.
In the quarterfinals, Thakkar, who represents the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB), had beaten Raj Mondal 11-5, 11-7, 12-10, 11-3.
The Gujarat team’s medals hopes in the individual section had ended after Devesh Karia lost to A. Sharath Kamal in the quarters, which he had entered with a strong upset win over seventh seed Subhajit Saha in the third round followed by a win over Anirban Nandi. Karia began slowly against Kamal and lost 11-2, 11-5, 9-11, 12-10, 13-11, with the latter’s experience and skills winning him the match.
A veteran paddler, Sharath was also responsible for the exit of Sports Authority of Gujarat-supported Manush Shah, who had sent second seed Arjun Ghosh packing in the third round. Shah lost to Sharath 6-11, 8-11, 7-11, 7-11.
