Ahmedabad: Surat’s Malay Thakkar and Bhavnagar’s Sonal Joshi claimed the men’s and women’s 40+ singles titles respectively at the 3rd Open Gujarat Veterans Table Tennis Tournament held at Rajpath Club in Ahmedabad on 20–21 January, 2018. Thakkar defeated Hetal Shah of Ahmedabad 11-9, 11-7, 11-4 and Joshi defeated Prasunna Parikh of Ahmedabad 12-10, 12-10, 11-9 in their respective finals. The event, organized by the Gujarat State Veteran TT Committee under the aegis of Gujarat State Table Tennis Association, saw participation from more than 150 players from across Gujarat.

In addition, Vadodara’s Satish Patel beat Ahmedabad’s Parag Shah 11-9, 11-3, 11-5 in the men’s 50–59 singles, and Gandhinagar’s Avinash Kaur beat Vadodara’s Subhangi Hardikar 9-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-7, 11-5 in the women’s 50–59 singles. In the men’s 40-49 doubles, Ahmedabad’s Hiral Mehta and Amish Patel defeated Rishi Sharma of Anand and Rujul Patel of Aravalli 11-8, 11-6, 11-9. The women’s 50+ doubles saw an all Vadodara final, where Maya Patel and Kinnari Patel beat Anjula Barupal and Madhu Parikh 11-6, 11-4, 11-8.

In the women’s 60+ singles, Ahmedabad’s Kokila Ghiya trounced Aruna Prajapati, also of Ahmedabad, 6-11, 7-11, 11-9, 13-11, 11-6. While Vadodara’s Nitin Bhatt and Kinnari Patel defeated Chandrakant Kantharia of Surat and Anjula Barupal of Vadodara 14-12, 7-11, 11-5, 13-11 in the mixed 50–59 doubles, Ahmedabad’s Dilip Shah and Aruna Prajapati beat B S Vaghela and Kokila Ghiya, also from Ahmedabd  11-6, 13-11, 12-10 in the mixed 60+ doubles.
