MeraNews Network, Gandhinagar: Despite there being a prohibition in place for open sale and consumption of liquor in Gujarat, smuggling of such contraband has been a thriving business for long. On average liquor and drugs worth Rs 40.79 lakhs is seized daily. IMFL (Indian Made Foreign Liquor) is one of the most smuggled liquor in the state at 2612 litres per day.
Congress MLAs in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly asked about a dozen questions during the recently concluded two-day monsoon session. According to the information given out as answers to the questions, 12.26 crore bottles of IMFL worth Rs 231 crore have been seized in the past two years. Of which 17.06 lakh bottles of beer worth Rs 17.87 crore and 16.39 lakh litres of locally brewed liquor worth Rs 3.07 crores were seized.
The written reply, given by the CMO and home department states that liquor and drugs worth a whopping 256.90 crores were seized from being smuggled into the state in the past two years. This is a clear indication that bootlegging and smuggling of liquor and drugs have been flourishing in the state either due to negligence of the police or due to them being hand in glove with these criminals.
