Panmunjeom: The international community has welcomed the historic summit between North Korean leaders Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in that could pave the way for the denuclearization of the peninsula.
Congratulating the leaders of both the Koreas, President of United States of America Donald Trump said, he was encouraged by their expressed goal of complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. “The United States seeks a future of peace, prosperity, and harmony unlocking a brighter future not just for the people of Korea but for the people of the world,” said Trump. He was speaking to reporters at the White House during the joint press conference with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who also said that the meeting was the first step on a road that will hopefully lead to a better future.
Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that he expects North Korea to take concrete steps towards carrying out its promises. In a statement, China's Foreign Ministry said, it hoped all parties could maintain the momentum for dialogue and jointly promote the resolution process.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said many around the world were moved by the powerful imagery of the two leaders coming together to advance harmony and peace on the Korean Peninsula. He said, “Secretary-General Antonio Guterres salutes the courage and leadership that resulted in the important commitments and agreed on actions”. Russia's Foreign Ministry also hailed the meeting as very positive news.
