Ahmedabad: Had Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel become prime minister, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would never have been formed and Narendra Modi would not have become Prime Minister, Congress leader Paresh Dhanani said on Thursday, strongly reacting to Modi’s speeches in Parliament in which he laid into the opposition on a range of topics from Congress rule in the country to employment and Aadhaar.

“Had Sardar become prime minister, the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) wouldn’t have survived, the BJP would not have been conceived, Modi ji wouldn’t have become prime minister,” Dhanani, the leader of the opposition in the Gujarat assembly, wrote in a post on Twitter.

“Inflation wouldn’t have risen, lies wouldn’t have to be tolerated, the poor wouldn’t go hungry, our soldiers wouldn’t have been martyred on our borders. It is sad that Sardar didn’t become prime minister,” he wrote.

While addressing the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Modi said “if Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel would have been the first PM of the country, entire Kashmir would have been ours,” in a speech in which he hit out at the Nehru-Gandhi family and questioned the Congress party’s commitment to democracy. Later in the Rajya Sabha, the Prime Minister accused the Congress of “dividing the country.”\
