Ahmedabad: Gujarat’s revenue department has directed the state’s district collectors to collect the fines imposed on state government officers who failed to provide information to applicants under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005.

The revenue department, in response to a communication from the general administration department dated 9 November, has sent a list of 65 officers who have not paid the fines levied by the Gujarat Information Commission, along with the letter dated 1 January. Bharat Raval, a section officer in the revenue department, said the district collectors also have to furnish proofs that the amounts have been recovered.

The directions come after C.M. Sisodiya, a joint secretary in the general administration department, wrote to the revenue department informing it of the fines imposed by the information commission after hearing various appeals. Of the 65 officers on the list, most are either of the mamlatdar rank or public information officers in their respective district administrations.
