Hitesh Chavda, Gandhinagar: Gujarati cinema and music industry's legendary artiste Mahesh Kanodia will be honored with a D.Litt (Doctor of Literature) degree from the Hemachandra Acharya North Gujarat University. The 81-year old singer-musician is well known for his contribution to the Gujarati traditional music industry. The senior-most member of Gujarat's most popular film-family-the Kanodias, Mahesh Kanodia is the elder brother of veteran actor Naresh Kanodia and their successful musical pair was popularly known as Mahesh-Naresh.

The decision to award this honorary degree to the veteran musician was taken in the annual meeting of the North Gujarat University chaired by the Vice Chancellor Dr. BA Prajapati. Hitu Kanodia, who is the nephew of Mahesh Kanodia said, "I'd like to congratulate Maheshbhai Kanodia for being honored with the D.Litt degree by the Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University for his invaluable contribution to the Gujarati cinema and music industry. I'd like to thank VC Dr. BA Prajapati, I/C registrar Dr. DM Patel and all the members of the executive council and Senate members of the North Gujarat University for bestowing this honor upon Mahesh Kanodiya."

Film critic Prof.Kartikey Bhatt called this decision a very positive one by the University. "He actually deserves the Padma Bhushan. He was a pious soul who worshipped his art. I am very glad for him." Mahesh Kanodia, who also maintains a very close relationship with the current Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, has been active in politics representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Patan district in Gujarat in the 10th, 11th, 12th and 14th Loksabha of India. His brother Naresh had represented Karjan constituency of Gujarat from 2002 to 2007.
