Ahmedabad: The state government's decision on not renewing permission of a processing unit set up within the 500-meter perimeter of the Gir Sanctuary was upheld by the Gujarat High Court on Monday. The industrial unit in question, Balaji Processors had moved HC challenging the government decision.
In the year 2016, Balaji Processors had challenged the state government's decision to revoke its permission for a clothes processing unit near Junagadh, in the Gujarat High Court. The firm previously had the permission to set up a processing unit from the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB), but in the year 2015, the board decided not to renew the unit’s permission claiming that the unit was polluting the eco-sensitive area around Girnar Forest and it will not allow any processing unit to operate in the vicinity of the sanctuary.
The firm had in its petition, demanded the government must revoke its decision of not renewing the permission it had granted to the industrial unit earlier. The hearing was done by a bench consisting of Justice MR Shah and Justice AY Kogje and it upheld the state government’s decision that any polluting unit cannot be allowed to operate within the 500-meter zone of the lion sanctuary.
