MeraNews Network, New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state Gujarat has emerged as the best-performing state in the States’ Startup Ranking 2018. The National Report on States' Startup Ranking was unveiled by Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry in New Delhi today.

With 100 percentile, Gujarat has performed better than all other states in all the seven areas including startup policy, incubation support, seeding innovation and scaling innovation. Gujarat is the only state to have achieved 100 percentile.

Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha, and Rajasthan, with a score of more than 85 percentile, have been adjudged the top performers. Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhatisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana have been recognized as Leaders. 27 states and 3 union territories participated in the ranking process.

The states were graded according to 6 categories, Beginners, Emerging States, Aspiring Leaders, Leaders, Top Performers, and Best Performers. DIPP believes that with this ranking, the states can foster their startup ecosystem in a planned way. The states have now been asked to rank their districts in the corresponding manner as it will help the state identify the weaknesses and strengths of the startup ecosystems across cities and villages in the states.

The rankings were given on the basis of the startup policy framework the department had announced in February 2018, which analyses, measures and compares the work done by the state governments in the form of initiatives and exercises taken up to aid the startups in the state.

51 officers from states and union territories were identified as ‘Champions’, who have made significant contributions towards developing their state’s Start-up ecosystem. Secretary DIPP, Ramesh Abhishek, said that startups are very important for the country as they create jobs and India resides in its states and start-ups with their innovative ideas will be able to solve social, agricultural and service sector problems of the country. He added, “These results are as much a recognition of the leading states as they are a celebration of efforts made by all the states for helping innovation and entrepreneurship across the length and breadth of the country.”
