Prashant Dayal, Ahmedabad: With the state home ministry planning to shuffle some of the top police officials across the state, there is a possibility if of CID Crime DGP Ashish Bhatia replacing IPS AK Singh as the Ahmedabad Police commissioner.

A mild-mannered Bhatia is known for his firm and staunch approach to policing, specializing in crime detection. His name had cropped up in many of the police encounters done during his tenure as a DSP, but no action was taken against him. He was also found in a case of mysterious death of an arrested person in his custody during his time as the joint commissioner in Ahmedabad Police. A Supreme Court-appointed investigative team had looked into the matter and submitted its report to the apex court. A case of custodial torture is still under hearing in the courts.

But there are no such cases against him right now that might stop him from being appointed as the Ahmedabad Police commissioner. He is also very well versed with the city and its crime history as he has been the DCP and joint commissioner in the city police force. He is also credited to be the one who had solved the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case. After Shivanand Jha’s tenure as the DGP of Gujarat gets over in 2020, Bhatia is the next in line officer, but the state government might give him the charge of Ahmedabad Police before that.
