Rajkot: A rag-picker belonging to the Dalit community was flogged to death in Shapar-Veraval on early Sunday morning by five men, who suspected him to be a thief. The man was rushed to Rajkot Civil Hospital in an EMRI 108 ambulance, where he died during his treatment.

The victim, 35-year old Mukesh Vania was picking waste material scattered outside Radadia Industries with his wife and his aunt when three employees and the owner of the factory arrived and spotted Vania. They caught hold of him, thinking he is a thief who was trying to steal something from the workshop and tied him up to a wall. The four men thrashed him with sticks and belt, a CCTV footage of which has now gone viral on social media.

The police have filed charges under relevant sections of Atrocities Act against the owner of Radadia Industries and its four employees. The victim’s furious relatives had refused to accept Mukesh’s body until the culprits, whose identities are yet to be ascertained, are arrested. But later they took the body for cremation to the victim’s native town Limbdi after the social justice department assured the family of compensation and police action against the culprits.
