Gandhinagar: Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), an Ahmedabad-based research institute has developed Plasma Activated Water (PAW), also dubbed as ‘wonder liquid’ or ‘wonder water,’ which can be used to destroy fungus, E-coli and other bacteria from fruits and vegetables and keep them fresh for about 40 days. This water prevents E-coli, fungus and other microbes from growing in fruits and vegetables.

According to report in English daily Times of India, IPR scientists have developed the Plasma Activated Water (PAW) system at its Facilitation Centre for Industrial Plasma Technologies (FCIPT), Gandhinagar. The scientists say the system was developed over past few months where normal water, once treated with non-thermal plasma, turns into PAW, or wonder liquid.

Scientists said that due to the plasma in this water, it removes E-coli bacteria and its fungus in seconds when other chemical additives take about 15-20 minutes for this. Tests conducted for the potential uses of PAW at Gujarat Environment Management Institute (GEMI) have found to have excellent anti-microbial properties and it eliminated all Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria in 30 minutes.

PAW also can also provide solutions to the problem of preservation of vegetables and fruits and this liquid can be used as a preservative too. Vegetables like tomatoes and potatoes washed in PAW once can keep them fresh for about 40 days in room temperature.
