Ahmedabad: After changing the timings of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly sessions to 11:30 am to 4:30 PM from 12th March due to complaints from MLAs suffering from diabetes and blood pressure finding it difficult to pull through the whole sessions, now the people’s representatives will also have snacks and full lunch being served to them along with the mini-meals they were being provided previously.

The house will be in session from 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM starting March 12, Monday to Thursday, during which it would be recess from 1 PM to 2 PM. On Fridays the morning sessions would begin at 9:30 am and would work till 2 PM in the afternoon. The recess timings on Fridays would be 11 AM to 12 PM. The change in timings are done because about 22 MLAs are diabetic while 65 of have blood-pressure problems, so they have to take their medications accordingly which was not possible during the previous timings of the house. Catering service too has been set up for the lawmakers in two different lounges for men and women. The MLAs would be served snacks like samosas, khaman, dhokla, sandwiches, sev-usal, khamni, patra, etc. alongside the lunches which would include puris-rotis, vegetables, pulses, dal-rice, farsan, salad and sweet.

The fare is going to cost the government Rs270 per plate, which means Rs40,500 per day for about 150 MLAs who attend the session daily. There are going to be about 30 more sessions, so the total bill for feeding the MLAs would come up to RS12 lakhs. It is a well known fact that ample political lobbying takes place to achieve catering contracts of this scale at the Assembly as it is not the same food that is being served at Circuit House or government guesthouse. With this contract, the catering services at the Assembly now resemble that of any star-level hotels and restaurants.
