New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry asked the state governments of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Haryana to tighten the security ahead of the verdict in a rape case against controversial and self-styled godman Asaram Bapu. A trial court in Jodhpur will be pronouncing its verdict in a rape case against Asaram on April 25.
The aforementioned three states are said to have a large number of followers in the godman and the center is taking precautions from the lesson it learned from the violence after the verdict of another self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insaan. In this case, Asaram is accused of raping a teenage female student in his ashram at Manai in Jodhpur in 2013. The victim, a native of Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh was then studying in his Chhindwara ashram in Madhya Pradesh.
Charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, Asaram might get sentenced to 10 years in prison if convicted. He has been denied several times by different courts, including 3 such applications by the Supreme Court. He is also facing rape charges in Gujarat after 2 Surat-based sisters had accused him and his son Narayan Sai of rape and illegal confinement during their stay in his Ahmedabad ashram from the time period of 2001 to 2006.
