Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad metropolitan court on Thursday issued arrest warrants against Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) chief Pravin Togadia and 38 leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) including sitting legislator Babu Jamna Patel in a case related to attempt to murder dating back to 1996.

The court has ordered the police to arrest the 39 people, which include Ilesh Patel, advocate Minesh Vaghela, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) official Krushnavadan Brahmbhatt, and produce them before it on 30 January.

The victims in the case were supporters of senior Gujarat politician Shankersinh Vaghela at the time of the “Khajuraho coup.” Vaghela left the BJP in 1996 following a disagreement within the party that also involved Keshubhai Patel over the choice of Gujarat chief minister. Vaghela later joined the Congress.

The complainant in the case is former BJP legislator Jagrupsinh Rajput. The case was first registered in the Naranpura police station and later transferred to the Ahmedabad crime branch. The court issued the arrest warrants on Thursday after the accused failed to appear before it despite many summons.
