MeraNews Network, Gandhinagar: The Ahir community, a prominent martial race from Gujarat, are demanding that a separate Ahir Regiment be formed in the Indian Army on the lines of the Ahir companies in the British Indian Army’s 95th Russel’s Infantry and the one in the Kumaon Regiment during the last stand at Rezang La in the Sino-Indian War.
The initiative titled Postcard to PM, members of the community in Gujarat and other states have sent post-cards to the prime minister in Delhi seeking fulfillment of their demands. So far, 10 lakh such postcards have been sent to the PMO by the community, with 5 lakh such letters being written from Gujarat itself.
The community’s demands to the prime minister include introducing an Ahir Regiment in the Indian Army, declaring November 18 as Shaurya Divas to commemorate the bravery of Ahir company in the last stand at Rezang La in the Sino-Indian war of 1962 and a chapter on this be introduced in history lessons in schools.
A youth leader from the community, Pravin Nakum says, “We have written postcards to the prime minister to have an Ahir regiment in the army. To take our demands forward, community leader Pravin Ram will be holding a fast at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on December 27 and a Swabhiman Rally. A similar bike rally will also take place on the same day at Ahmedabad.”
He further informed that on February 4, about 26 crore Yadav youth will march to Ram Lila Maidan in New Delhi to push the government to fulfill the community’s demands.
