Ahmedabad: Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmaavat’, earlier titled ‘Padmavati’, will not release in Gujarat, chief minister Vijay Rupani said on Friday, soon after his Madhya Pradesh counterpart Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the film will not release in his state, too, News18 reported.
The development close on the heels of Rajasthan said that theatres across the state will not screen the film.
The film, which was initially scheduled to release on 1 December, has been mired in controversy since production began, with Rajput groups led by the Karni Sena protesting against it and claiming it distorts history. The Central Board for Film (CBFC) appointed a panel of historians to look into the claims and finally cleared the film with some changes on condition that the name be changed to ‘Padmaavat’.
The historical drama is based on the ‘Mahakavya Padmavat’, written by Malik Muhammad Jaisi, the 16th century Awadhi poet. Deepika Padukone plays the titular character in the film, which also features Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji, the ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, and Shahid Kapoor as Ratan Singh, who was defeated by Khilji at Chittor.
